Baby Allergies

Babies may have allergies to a variety of things like dust mites, pollen, animal dander, cigarette smoke or detergents. These could cause rashes or congestion. For other babies, allergic reactions can be triggered by proteins in food, including ones found in cow's milk.

Symptoms that suggest your baby may have a cow milk protein allergy include colic, wheezing, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody stools or mucus in stools, rash, or eczema. It's always best to discuss these symptoms with your baby's doctor so they can be diagnosed and treated correctly.

Note that up to 10% of infants with severe cow’s milk or food protein allergies cannot tolerate a formula where the protein has been extensively hydrolyzed, or broken down. In this situation a formula that contains free amino acids may be required.

Your baby’s doctor is always the best person to consult if you suspect severe allergy.
